Who needs this qualification?

Anyone who wants to sell or supply alcohol to the public must have a Personal Licence. To obtain a Personal Licence, an individual must first complete a Level 2 training course and pass an exam, which covers the legal and social responsibilities of selling alcohol.

The Award for Personal Licence Holders training is therefore intended for anyone who wants to apply for a Personal Licence, or who is already a Personal Licence holder and needs to renew their licence. This includes bar staff, pub landlords, restaurant owners, shopkeepers, and any other individual who is involved in the sale or supply of alcohol.

Why is this training important?

Training provides individuals with the knowledge and understanding necessary to sell or supply alcohol responsibly and lawfully. By completing the training, individuals demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the important topics and their commitment to selling or supplying alcohol responsibly. It also ensures that they are able to comply with the Licensing Act 2003 requirements and minimise the risks associated with alcohol consumption, which can help to protect both themselves and the wider community.

Assessment type

To obtain the qualification that users need to get their personal licence, they will need to separately take and pass the invigilated examination, the Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH). At the end of the course there is a test made up of 40 multiple-choice questions to help embed the learning and to show the user their level of knowledge. They will need to pass this end test to complete the course, but this is not their qualification.
