As Shield Safety Group’s Recruitment Manager, I am responsible for generating talent pipelines, interviewing applicants, managing external vendors and internal stakeholder’s expectations.

I love mornings, so I tend to start my day quite early. I get to the office by around 7:30, open up the shutters, stick the kettle on and sometimes chip in and empty the dishwasher. (Sometimes…)

After taking full advantage of the free breakfast, including the fresh fruit and the great coffee machine, I log into my laptop and spend 10 minutes reading the latest news headlines. Then it’s time to catch up on my emails and overnight applicants for all live vacancies. After prioritising the applicants and emails, I set to and start contacting the successful candidates and scheduling interviews for later in the week.

Every morning I attend stand-up meetings with the HR team, to discuss progress made on each open requisition and what actions need to be taken, if any. We then get the Recruitment Team together to run through today’s plan and workload for each team member.

After this I take care of any pressing requirements before speaking to any selected agencies to get status reports and to give/gather interview feedback. I also visit job sites to check that all adverts are still live and generating the applicants we need to keep the pipeline of candidates active.

Before lunch I typically have either 1 face-to-face interview or 4-6 telephone interviews to conduct. I love this job as I get to speak to interesting and motivated people every day. Interviewing can be a stressful exercise for most candidates so we do our best to make them feel at ease and give them every opportunity possible to display the competencies we have identified as crucial for the role.

The morning normally flies by, so by 12:30 I take my lunch. Luckily we are based in Manchester’s Northern Quarter so finding quality food is never a problem. Today I’m also meeting an old friend so we head to one of the bars for a bite to eat and a quick game of table tennis.

This afternoon I have a few internal meetings to attend, the first being a catch up with the Sales Director. This is to update him on the candidates we have for a number of key roles within his department. The next meeting is with the Managing Director who has identified a new staffing requirement and would like us to start sourcing candidates. We sit down and discuss technical requirements, budgets and time lines. This is normally where stakeholder management becomes a priority. Like most Hiring Managers they would like the candidate yesterday and for free, therefore it’s important that I not only know the market but can also communicate the issues we may face and manage his expectations.

Today we have a candidate coming in for a final stage interview which involves a presentation, so I spend between 20-40 minutes preparing for this. Today’s candidate did very well in the final stage interview, she showed us all the attributes and competencies needed to be successful, therefore after receiving approval from HR and Finance we progress with the offer. This is my favourite part of the job.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be speaking to the successful candidate to arrange their induction and gather references. Then once they’ve started I will work alongside our Training Manager and their Line Manager to generate a training and development programme based on the interview notes. This will give them a clear path to the next stage in their career with Shield Safety Group.

It’s 17.00 (yes I did say 5pm). So that means home time. It’s been a busy day but I can never complain about that. Off to the gym and to see the family after a jam-packed and enjoyable day. We believe that your personal time is just as important as the time you spend in the office so if your time is managed effectively in the day you’ll never need to stay later than 5pm to get your job done.
