Meet the GMBA Business Person of the Year 2018

Following the overall success of the Greater Manchester Business Awards 2017, and our own personal success of CEO Mark Flanagan taking home Business Person of the Year 2017, we were delighted to take part in the awards for a second year running.

The Greater Manchester Business Awards (GMBA) celebrate the professionalism and excellence of businesses in the area, and are judged by an independent panel to ensure the process is as fair and impartial as possible. The GMBA 2018 ceremony took place on 9th February at Radisson Edwardian Blu Hotel in central Manchester, with another fantastic evening had by all.

Our Chief Technology Officer, Richard Jordan, was nominated for Business Person of the Year 2018. This award celebrates an individual who shows innovation and support for their team, whilst leading them to success.

Also a Shield Safety co-owner, Rich bought into the company in 2004 and has been instrumental in the success of the business. In the early days, Rich built our very first Customer Relationship Management system which is still in place today. The headcount was a very different picture back then, with two colleagues (Mark and Rich) doing everything between them – as opposed to our 150 current standing. This meant Rich was involved in all areas from operations to accounts to sales, essentially anything that wasn’t Environmental Health!

One of the main ways in which Rich has supported Shield Safety in achieving our rapid growth of 50%+ over the last few years, has been his work in creating and developing our award-winning SaaS risk and safety management system, Compliance Centre. Originally designed to solve one client’s requirements, the system has gone from strength to strength and today makes safety simple for thousands of users through a unique algorithm to calculate risk (and more).

Today, Rich is heavily involved in all areas of the business supporting all colleagues and has built up a software team of experts to – who have recently made the move across to fully utilising agile methodologies as we showed you in New learnings, new office.

But enough from us, hear the story from the man himself here:

We were also a finalist for Business of the Year (over 50 colleagues) this year, though missed out on this one to Onefile – worthy winners. Congratulations to them and all the other finalists and winners.

Thanks to the Greater Manchester Business Awards team for another great night, highlights of the evening can be seen here.
