Our much-loved hospitality industry has been severely affected by the pandemic. That’s why we created the Safe to Trade Scheme (STTS), and why we’re giving 10% of the Scheme’s registration fee back to our chosen charity – Hospitality Action.

The Scheme creates safer places, bringing back some normality to the hospitality sector and enables relaxing, worry-free environments for everyone. It’s been developed to give consumers and employees confidence that the business is going above and beyond government guidance.

Safe to Trade Scheme purpose

Developed by a team of Safety Practitioners and leading industry experts, and administered by Shield Safety Group.

The Safe to Trade charter is designed to:

  • Instil employee and consumer confidence that the business has gone above and beyond the Government guidance, with a feedback & performance rating system for transparency and continual improvement
  • Enable businesses to reopen safely, with ongoing checks and monitoring through compliance controls via our award-winning software and app
  • Independently verify and validate, providing context and evidence that a business is taking safety performance seriously
  • Allow businesses to demonstrate their commitment to trading safely, through robust compliance controls

Your performance rating and feedback

The Safe to Trade Scheme is bridging the gap between Government guidance and tangible action for recovery. Critically, it encourages businesses to capture employee and customer feedback, in the form of best practice and alleged breaches, to improve the continual cycle of improvement.

This process will allow continual feedback to help businesses improve and increase standards, whilst building and extending consumer confidence and trust.

Reassuring regulators

The Safe to Trade Scheme is a one stop shop to help businesses interpret and implement COVID-19 legal and best practice requirements. It provides a clear standard for sites to work to, online and telephone support, routine monitoring and independent verification so that businesses can confidently demonstrate their COVID-19 compliance to customers, employees and regulators.

Regulated by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Safe To Trade Scheme provides nationwide Assured Advice through Shield Safety Group’s Primary Authority Coordinated Partnership with Milton Keynes Council. Members of the scheme can be confident their business is complying with the law and will receive protection from COVID-19 related enforcement action. This is very important when regulators have different views on what a business should be doing to achieve compliance.

Provided that the business follows the Assured Advice they’ve been given, they should not face enforcement action from an enforcing authority that has a different view on whether compliance is being achieved. An enforcing authority has to establish that your business hasn’t followed its Primary Authority Advice before it can take enforcement action against you. In most circumstances, the Primary Authority must be notified before enforcement action can be taken and they can block the action if it conflicts with Assured Advice.
