Former head of local delivery at Food Standards Agency joins Shieldyourself

John Barnes appointed Strategic Advisor at compliance company

The former Head of Local Delivery at the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is set to take on a strategic advisor role with the UK’s leading compliance provider, Shieldyourself.

Shieldyourself has developed an unparalleled reputation for its innovative approach to Health and Safety, Fire Safety and Food Safety regulatory compliance. John Barnes will work closely with the senior team assisting them with their growth objectives and product development.

Qualifying as an Environmental Health Officer in 1977, John has spent more than four decades helping to improve food safety and public health in a range of roles in local and central government, as well as in the private sector. He has held a number of roles developing and implementing national and international food controls.

He was appointed Head of Local Delivery, in 2012, where he was responsible for ensuring effective UK food and feed safety controls in the 700,000 UK food and feed businesses operating in the catering, retail, manufacturing and primary production sectors. He retired from the FSA in July 2015.

Speaking about his appointment at Shieldyourself, John said: “Shieldyourself is a growing company with excellent products to support food businesses. It’s now one of the UK’s leading food and health and safety consultancies in the Hospitality sector, which in my view operates one of the best food safety control systems in the world.

“Current regulatory delivery models will change significantly in the next few years, due to a reducing public sector, so companies like Shieldyourself and its products will be increasingly important in assuring business compliance, and enabling regulators to target their resources on those businesses without a good understanding of risk and proper controls.

“I look forward to working with such a dynamic team and helping the company continue to grow and develop.”

Shieldyourself was launched in 2003 after founder, Mark Flanagan, identified a gap in the market for online software to help clients manage their safety obligations. Thirteen years on it has offices in Manchester and London and works with more than 800 clients across various sectors, including retail, manufacturing and hospitality.

Welcoming John to the Shieldyourself, Mark said: “The experience and expertise that John has is outstanding and to have someone with his reputation join our team is a big milestone for us.

“His insights and advice are going to be invaluable and everyone is looking forward to learning from him as we take our business to the next level. There are so many changes happening in the compliance industry at the moment and we are going to hugely benefit from John’s strategic role with Shieldyourself.”
